What the calculator does

Wood swells as it absorbs moisture and shrinks as it dries — almost entirely across the grain, almost none along it. How much depends on three things the calculator asks for: the species (each has measured shrinkage coefficients), the grain orientation (flatsawn boards move roughly twice as much as quartersawn), and the moisture swing (a heated home cycles between roughly 6% moisture content in winter and 10–12% in humid summer).

The output is the number that decides real joinery questions: how much gap a floating panel needs in its frame, why a 36-inch tabletop screwed rigidly to its aprons cracks by February, and whether that gap-and-a-slotted-screw is paranoia or physics.

The formula (so you can check the math)

Movement = Width × Coefficient × ΔMC

where the coefficient is the species’ dimensional change coefficient (inches of movement per inch of width per 1% moisture change — the dropdown carries published USDA Wood Handbook values, tangential and radial), and ΔMC is the moisture swing in percentage points. The linear formula is accurate in the ~6–14% MC range where furniture actually lives.

Typical indoor swing for a heated home: 6% (winter) to 12% (humid summer) — the calculator’s default. Climate-controlled year-round space might see 8–11%; a screened porch or garage sees more like 6–16%.

Worked example

A 36-inch-wide flatsawn red oak tabletop in a normal heated home (6% → 12% MC):

Movement = 36 × 0.00369 × 6 = 0.80 inches

Four-fifths of an inch, every year, forever. That’s why tabletops attach with slotted clips or figure-8 fasteners instead of rigid screws. Build the same top from quartersawn red oak and it’s 36 × 0.00158 × 6 = 0.34 in — less than half. Species choice matters too: the same top in cherry (flatsawn) moves 0.54 in; in teak, 0.40 in.

Who this is for

Anyone building solid-wood anything wider than a cutting board: tabletops, panels, drawer fronts, countertops, or wide shelves. A finish slows the exchange but doesn’t stop it — even multiple coats of polyurethane only smooth the seasonal curve. Frequently Asked Questions

How much does wood move across the grain vs along it?

Across the grain (width of a flatsawn board): roughly 1/4 inch per foot of width over a full indoor humidity cycle in movement-prone species. Along the grain (length): about 0.01% — effectively nothing. This is why breadboard ends, which run cross-grain, must let the top slide.

Does plywood or MDF move too?

Not meaningfully. Plywood’s alternating grain directions cancel each other out (~0.02% across a panel), which is exactly why case backs, panels, and cabinet boxes are plywood territory. Wood movement rules apply to solid wood.

Can I stop wood movement with enough finish coats?

No — film finishes slow moisture exchange, they don’t seal it. A heavily finished top still reaches the same equilibrium, just weeks later. Sealing all faces evenly does matter though: finishing only the show face makes one side exchange moisture faster and the board cups.

How much gap should I leave for a floating panel?

Run the panel’s width through the calculator for your climate’s swing, then leave at least half that movement on each side of the groove (movement splits both directions from the panel’s center if it’s pinned there). For a 12-inch flatsawn oak panel: ~0.27 in total, so 5/32 per side is comfortable.
